10 Days of Carne Asada: Searching for the Best Carne Asada Burrito in Los Angeles
November 6th, 2007 · 1 Comment
Here is the thing. If I can’t eat at least one burrito a week, I will go through withdrawals. The last food I ate before leaving the country for 10 days was a burrito. The first place I went to after getting back in the country was a Mexican restaurant…for a burrito. I went straight from the airport to El Tarasco for a Carne Asada Burrito. It is an awesome addiction, but it’s time to find out where the best burro in LA lives. To find the best carne asada burrito, I am going to go on a 10 day hunt where I will try at least one burrito a day.
Since I am not looking for a gourmet burrito, I am setting the maximum price at $8. The burrito should showcase the carne asada, so rice and beans are not allowed. Guacamole, cheese, onions, cilantro, pico de gallo, and house salsas are allowed, but not required. At the end of this, one burrito will be crowned king.
Day 1: El Taurino
Day 2: Taco Village
Day 3: Cactus
Day 4: Tacos Por Favor
Day 5: Pacos Tacos
Day 6: El Super Taco
Day 7: Tacos La Flama
Day 8: Mrs Garcia’s
Day 9: Tacos Mexico
Day 10: Campos
10 days of carne asada was not as fun as I thought it would be, but now I feel like an authority on the subject. I realized that a really good carne asada burrito will still be delicious when removed of all fillings other than the carne asada. The meat needs to be cut in chunks that are large enough to bite into, but not so large that they pose a choking hazard. It should be fresh of the grill, hot, and juicy. The seasoning of the carne is a tricky thing to master. The seasoning needs to compliment the meat. Anything more, and the meat is no longer the focus.
The best carne asada burrito was at Taco Village in Montebello. Their meat was freshly grilled, juicy and delicious. They even served the burrito open faced with nothing but meat inside so that diners can get the true “all-meat” experience. It is really worth the trek out to Montebello and I am really considering ways to steal their carne asada recipe.
