Beer Hockey: Greatest Drinking Game Ever
August 21st, 2007 · 7 Comments

Forget about all of the snobs who say drinking games are immature. This game will transform even the stuffiest wine sniffer into a beer slurping believer. After running through the gauntlet of college drinking games, I have realized that this game reigns supreme. Beer Hockey has an “athletic” component and definitely promotes healthy competition. It doesn’t demand any equipment other than a quarter, a table like surface, some opponents, and enough beer (or any other beverage) to get the job done. The setup: All players sit/stand around a table with their beer in front of them.  Although a game can be played with 2 people, a good game requires 3 or more. Objective: To get everyone else at the table stumbling drunk while moderating your own drinking.

Instructions: Pick someone to start the game. That person will be the spinner. He/she will spin the quarter on the table and call out another player who will be the shooter. Once the shooter is called everyone can begin guarding their beers from the shooter (see image below for proper guarding form). The shooter needs to hit the other players’ beers with the quarter.  Normally the shooter uses a swiping movement, which is similar to a hockey stick hitting a puck. The shooter needs to take his/her shot while the coin is still spinning. If the shooter hits a beer and the quarter bounces off and keeps spinning, anyone can jump in and start shooting the quarter at opponents’ beers for as long as the quarter spins. No one involved can move their beer while people are shooting.

beer_hockey.jpgIf a person or multiple people are hit, ridicule them and congratulate all shooters on their assassin like skills. Here is where the drinking starts. The original shooter now spins the quarter. All players who were just hit have to chug their beer for as long as the quarter spins on the table. Those who are not pounding their beers can flick the quarter to keep it spinning. If in the shooting melee, the original shooter gets hit, another shooter can spin the quarter for the chugging. If a player gets hit multiple times they need to chug for that many quarter spins. The first person who was hit becomes the new spinner and the action resumes.

If no one gets hit, then the person to the left of the original spinner becomes the spinner and the mayhem starts again. Make sure that players aren’t putting up their guards before a name is called or blocking the beer with their whole hand. The hand can be moved up and down, as long as only the 2 fingers in the image are covering the beer from the quarter.

Here are a few extra rules of play which spice up the game: If a player spills a beer, they need to chug the rest of it. If they spill more than half, they need to chug a whole beer. All beers on the table are open game for shooters. Their owner will have to drink if they get hit. This includes beers of players who leave the table to go to the bathroom or anywhere else.

The game ends when the beer runs out. Enjoy this game and the mayhem which it brings. See the Beer Hockey Video Highlight Reel here.

This is seriously one of the greatest games ever. I love it and played it before i browsed this website, but i have a tough time getting my friends to play with me, they are big fans of beer pong and kings. In addition to the extra rules, i like to make it a rule that if a person puts up his guard too early or protects with more than two fingers, they are automatically put in the penalty box. The penalty box is when someone starts the quarter, and everybody is allowed to shoot at the offenders beer, but he is not allowed to protect, and however many times his beer gets hit is how many spin’s he has to drink through. Trust me people stop cheating quick, i have seen people get hit upwards of six times, and it is not pretty.

i play this game every chance i get and my friends and I have a few variations which i think make it that much more fun.
these extra rules are as follows:
    1. if a person has their hands above the table when the quarter is flicked any one can call “premature” on them and they are not aloud to put up a golly to guard their drink.
    2. if a person flicks the quarter off the table, it is “icing” and the person must drink 5
    3. (not for the faint of hart) if beer is spilt on the table, every one yells Zambony and the person responsible for the spill must slurp the spilt beer off of the table. I have even played with people who have insisted that puke be “zambonied” off of the table. if a person refuses they are ejected from the game and may even face a lifetime ban.
    4. any drink on the table is fare game. if some one leaves their drink unattended then you may score on them at will.
    5. at any time when your drink is done, you can yell out “line change” and the person closest to you drink must get you a new one.

i feel these rules make the game more interesting but they are for advanced players. trying to explain the rules to drunk rookies can be frustraiting

we also play by the rule if someone stops the spinning quarter on high end, the drinker must chug the rest of his beer

We add the rule that if the person whose can/bottle gets hit can finish their beer while the quarter is still spinning for them, they can then slam their beer and attempt to hit another player’s beer. If they hit someone’s beer, the owner of the beer must finish their beer, no matter whats left in it. Adds an incentive to drink fast when the quarter is spinning.

Rule 1) If your drink is on the table during a hockey match, then you are actively playing that match. In which time your can will probably get hit, a lot. Bitching will result in karate chop.
Rule 2) All player have to hold their goalie above their drink until whoever has spun calls a name. Only after a name is called can players move their goal to position it. HOWEVER, A GOALIE CAN NOT BE MOVED AT ALL. THE SPACE BETWEEN YOUR POINTER FINGER AND YOUR PINKY, WHEN BOTH ARE POINTING, MUST BE POINTED AT THE QUARTER. ONCE YOUR HAND MOVES DOWNWARD TOWARD THE BOTTOM OF YOUR DRINK, IT CANT MOVE SIDE TO SIDE INFRONT OF THE DRINK.
Rule 3) Once the spinner spins the quarter they must YELL a name, or point, of another player who then tries to hit an opponent’s drink. If the quarter hits then the player hit will, once the quarter stops spinning, will be drinking (Refer to rule 4 for drinking length) HOWEVER, passing is allowed, and as long as the quarter is still spinning on the table than any player may attempt to hit someone else’s drink.
Rule 4) Once the quarter has stopped spinning or fallen off the table, then those whose cans were hit prepare to drink. In order to save time multiple may go on a single spin. Once the quarter is spun then those who were hit start drinking. The players who were not hit may flick the quarter in order for it to spin longer. Basically, as long as the quarter is spinning on the table you continue to drink. This will be repeated the more times you are hit. (Hit once= one spin, Hit twice= two spins, etc)
