Ahhhh…Wonton Soup. It was my chicken soup for sick or rainy days growing up. Although I never knew what was in a wonton as a kid, there was something comforting about wonton soup served up in a steaming bowl. Among a few other things, what really brought me to B’s Wonton Noodle House was a glowing mini-review of their BBQ Pork Wonton Soup on the LAist.
B’s Wonton Noodle House is a tiny little spot hidden in a nook of a Chinatown strip mall. Closer to the street in the plaza where B’s is located, oolong tea, turtles and frogs were being sold next to cheap tourist stuff. It seemed like the type of spot where some really good wonton soup could be found.
The menu was pretty large for such a small shop, but nothing on the menu was over $10. There must be seating for 16 people max. We ordered the BBQ Pork Wonton Soup, along with some Spicy Salted Fried Squid. The lady who took the order seemed to have a better idea of what we wanted than even we did so we let her riff a bit on the soup order. In her words the difference between the soup we ordered and the one she was giving us was that her suggestion is better. The menu just stated that her soup was the same except it came with shrimp and a fried scallion pancake. Either way, it sounded good and I wasn’t about to argue.

The food came quickly and I dove right into the acclaimed wonton soup. Perhaps my expectations were too high or our server unloaded something sub-par on us, but I wasn’t impressed with the soup. It was good, but not special at all. The wontons were few and they barely had any filling. The BBQ Pork Chunks were pretty good and they didn’t oversweeten the rest of the dish which was relieving. While it was good that the soup wasn’t too sweet, I was expecting the BBQ Pork Wonton Soup to have a unique flavor compared to other Wonton Soups. I didn’t get that and overall the soup was less flavorful than the super savory Wonton Soups that I had grown up on…or maybe they just held back on the MSG.

The fried squid was very good and it looked like others at the restaurant were enjoying the dishes that they ordered so maybe B’s will get another chance. Keep you posted.
