Visions of the Bay - San Francisco, Oakland, and Berkeley Someone lend me a dollar

Restaurant Review of EL Tepeyac
August 22nd, 2008 · 1 Comment

I was on my lunch break and I’m happy to say that I’ve tried yet another good burrito within Los Angeles. This place is in the Boyle Heights area of L.A.  I was warned before hand that it is like eating inside of a Mexican Aunt’s living room (this could be either positive or negative depending on the way you look at it). Anyway, I was not warned about the size of the burritos here. Actually, I had a McMuffin type sandwich only a few hours before coming so you can say that I was pretty unprepared when I was told that the burritos are about a foot long and maybe 6-7 inches tall. Seriously.

When I got to the restaurant, there was already a large crowd standing outside (always a good sign). I’m pretty sure the waitresses waited until almost everyone had left the restaurant until letting in the group of 20-25 people waiting outside to eat. Inside, the space was small but with an authentic and cozy feel. Our waitress was nurturing, making sure that she got each of our orders correct and bringing us a free soda. Once i got the burrito I ordered, I knew what all the buzz was about. It was covered in sauce (tamatillo?) and cheese and it really was huge. Served with a knife sticking out of its top, there was no way I would be able to pick this thing up. At this point, my thoughts were, “sure its a big burrito, but will the taste match up?” And it did. First, there was enough carne asada in there (a very common issue in the world of burritos), and a nice balance of beans, rice, and gucamole. There were already two kinds of salsa at the table when we sat down, but the waitress kindly brought us another kind. These salsas were just spicy enough to give the burrito a nice finish.

So I get back to work, and I decide to do a Google search for the rstaurant and I came to find out that this place is already very well-known. Winning numerous awards as LA’s best burrito for years, I can’t beleive I hadn’t heard of this place earlier. Word on the street is that the restraunt, while being in known gang territory, is a place where rivals call a truce just so they can enjoy thier burritos in peace. SO if you haven’t heard of this palce and you have a love for burritos that stretches like the Iowa planes, then make the drive/bike/bus ride/walk out to this place. I think you’d enjoy it.

If you thought the Manuel special (I assume that’s the burrito you got?) was big, wait until you see what you get when you ask for a side of sour cream.
